Will DeFreece

New York City Recruitment Specialist

Will serves as the Director of Recruitment for NYC, Long Island, and Westchester for the SUNY System. Will’s strengths are recognizing schools and building networks that fit the universities profile in order to increase student applications and deposits. This work is driven by researching historical and current data, along with studying the students that each high school in NYC and its surrounding area serve.

Outside of his team’s downstate recruitment efforts, Will also trains various SUNY campuses NYC Admissions Counselors on how to effectively recruit and convert students into applicants.

Will has formally been Assistant Director of Admissions at Columbia School of Social Work, Assistant Director of Admissions at SUNY Oswego, and Admissions Counselor and Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment at SUNY Delhi. He also has served as the Advisor for the Black Student Union and was on SUNY Delhi’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Committee.

“NYC, Long Island, and Westchester is the largest Metropolitan area in the nation. Colleges must understand the various types of schools. Parochial, public, private, and charter schools are vastly different. In order to effectively recruit, a university needs to know the high schools’ profile and their own campuses offerings, along with other many other factors in order to achieve maximum success within these areas. Too many colleges fail recruiting diverse student populations in NYC and the surrounding areas because they don’t identify the student’s connection with their own campus. I have had tremendous success with recognizing high schools that best fit the campuses in which I’ve worked.”
